Where Eldership Often Fails

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.

1 Peter 5: 1-3 (KJV)

Feed the flock – I often find this amazing that Peter saw it fit to remind the eldership to feed the flock. Is that not what is expected of their service simply by them being elders? I guess sometimes something happens to elders in positions of authority. Sometimes elders forget to feed the flock.

Suffering

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

1 Peter 5:10 (KJV)

Suffered – Peter writes to the “strangers scattered” (1 Peter 1:1) who are the “sheep gone astray” (1 Peter 2:25). This repeats Yeshua’s words how He came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 15:24). They were being reconciled to God by Yeshua’s death and resurrection. These lost sheep were returning to their first love. But it wasn’t easy for the house of Israel to make this return. Suffering was a part of it. Continue reading “Suffering”
