Stop Asking and Start Acting

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Oppressed – When we fast, we often times ask God to perform some sort of action in our lives. We’re afflicting ourselves in attempted humility and beseeching our Creator’s help. But in Isaiah 58, God turns it around on us. Rather than doing what we ask, He asks us to do something else instead.

Afflict Your Souls

Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

Leviticus 23:27 (KJV)

Afflict your souls – There is only one day per year required by God to fast. And what’s interesting is it doesn’t even say “to fast”, but rather to “afflict your souls”. So where is the correlation made, and how did we end at the conclusion of fasting? Continue reading “Afflict Your Souls”
