Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jeremiah 31:31 (KJV)
New – To make sure we’re all clear, these are the exact words Yeshua is referencing in His speech to the Apostles during the last supper. He breaks some bread, drinks some wine, and establishes a new covenant.
Here’s the exact words.
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (Matthew 26:26-28)
So there’s a new testament… or covenant, rather. It’s being established by Yeshua. We all know that Yeshua undoubtedly realizes that Jeremiah prophesied about this very moment 500+ years before Yeshua showed up. It’s absolutely clear that Yeshua is using the same words as Jeremiah, right? These two verses are about the same thing.
As long as we can agree here, then we’re open for a paradigm shift. I’ve mentioned before that the new covenant isn’t really new at all — it’s renewed.
How could that be though? It’s obvious the word in English is “new.” Well for starters, in the post that I linked to above, the word in Greek (Yeshua didn’t speak in Greek with His apostles) is kainos which means “new in nature,” not something that is new in time. In order for something to be new in nature, it had to exist before. And it has to be similar to this new thing… it’s refreshed in a sense.
But the reason I wanted to make absolutely clear that Yeshua is referencing the word “new” from Jeremiah is because that word reveals so much more. The word is chadash ( חֲדָשָׁה ) which comes from the root of the same letters, chadash, and means “renew” or “repair.”
God is speaking through Jeremiah, “I will make a repaired covenant” or “I will make a renewed covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”
This aligns perfectly with the revelation that when the house of Israel was divorced in Jeremiah 3:8, they were cut off from the covenant. The first husband had to die in order for them to be freed from the law of divorce in Deuteronomy 24 which is referred to by Paul in Romans 7. Yeshua died, freeing the house of Israel from the law of divorce so that the covenant that was already established could be renewed, or rebuilt.
And notice that God issues forth a renewed covenant with the two houses: Israel and Judah. This is repeated in Hebrews.
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: (Hebrews 8:8)
The renewed covenant was always about the two houses; Israel and Judah. It’s was always concerning the whole house of Jacob — all 12 tribes. This is the kingdom of God.
