Elect – Today was Donald Trump’s inauguration. He is now the President of the United States of America. President Trump.
I don’t know much about politics, and rarely contribute to them, so correct me if I’m wrong. President Trump wasn’t elected by the people because the polls show that the popular vote went to Hillary. But Trump won the presidency because he was elected by the Electoral College (the representatives of the people). However that works…
And like most other controversies, my interest was piqued, and I decided to watch his inauguration speech today. He mentioned God a couple times, and even gave a hat tip to a quote from the Bible. I’m not sure how common this is nowadays, but I appreciated the gesture. But ultimately, Trump is our President because some elected officials elected him – not God. God’s elected representatives are outlined in Colossians above.
They are holy and beloved. Holy means “set apart” (most likely from worldly ways, influences, and patterns). This isn’t Trump. He’s definitely a worldly man. The other word here is “beloved” and we all know Trump has the lowest approval rating ever for an incoming President.
The next words are “bowels of merices”. Anyone following his Twitter feed will notice that he isn’t too merciful. Instead he spouts out quick replies to any combatants that cross his path, cutting them down with his words.
There’s an interesting analysis of his Twitter feed found in a YouTube video here: How (And Why) Donald Trump Tweets. You’ll notice that the tweets that come from him (not his staff) are not kind, humble, meek, nor are they longsuffering.
So I guess what I’m trying to say here is that while I accept that Trump is our new President (he was the lesser of two evils IMO), I don’t believe he engenders the characteristics of one of God’s elected representatives. But I also don’t know him. I’ve never met him, and base most of my opinions on sounds bites, tweets, and random reads in the interwebs. I can be completely wrong. I hope I am.
So, President Trump, while I appreciate your efforts to include God in your speech and recognize your desire to make America great again, I ask that you take a look at your actions and words. I know you’re not afraid to go against the grain, but being elected by the people, and being an elect of God are two entirely different things. Take heed to the latter. True greatness will only come from those attributes stated in Colossians 3:12.
