Where is Our Desire?

I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me.

Desire – Where is our desire? I know it seems like such an obvious answer, right? Most of us would say, “Our desire is for God”, and I would imagine that’s a wonderful answer, but let’s review this word further.

The Song of Solomon is a very explicit book detailing a beautiful relationship between a husband and wife. It is the perfect relationship filled with captivating love, cherished moments, and earnest devotion. This book is all about desire, it is all about verse 7:10. If we want this sort of relationship, the kind that completely pulls us in, then our desire should be to our wives. But we have strayed from this. Our desire is no longer toward our wives. Instead it is directed toward our jobs, our hobbies, sports, etc. and our relationships have suffered because of it.

In fact most of us have modeled our marriages after the curse placed on Eve in the Garden. Rather than our desires being fully invested in our wives, we command that they desire us, and we rule over them.

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Genesis 3:16 (KJV)

Yes, the curse for sin is that our wives will desire for us, and we will rule over them. Isn’t this the model of our marriages? I am the king of my house and my wife is subject to me. This is how God planned it, right? Nope. This is the curse. Marriage wasn’t intended to be like this, and a wife wasn’t meant to serve as a weaker partner. If you prefer the weaker partner to rule over, then don’t read Proverbs 31. Our wives were meant to be strong, virtuous women, like lionesses providing for the pack, and our desires were meant to be toward them, not the other way around.

You see, the word desire in its Paleo-Hebrew form is made up of tav, shin, vav, quph, and hey. Each letter represents an idea or expression. Altogether they form this meaning: a sign of two bound together repeating in awe. If only our relationships were that great. Well, men, we have the power to make it so. We have the ability to bind our marriages together in continuous awe!

Think about it. Have you noticed that divorce rates in the US are over 50%? Is your marriage lacking? Why do you think Yeshua, when questioned about divorce in Matthew 19, points us back to the Garden? It is time to restore our marriages to their true design. In the beginning, God made them male and female.
